Mercy Retirement & Care Center is very well-run. They have group activities. The place is bright, sunny, and not depressing. The staff is very professional. They have a very nice courtyard and they're also expanding. The only thing is they serve American food and my father would prefer Chinese food. They're also on the pricier side.
Provider Response
The satisfaction of residents and guests means a great deal to us, and we're delighted to know you and your father are pleased with nearly everything our community offers. We'd be happy to discuss your father's meal preferences, and explore options on how we may enhance his dining experience further. Please don't hesitate to give us a call to discuss, or drop by next time you're on campus to visit.

Mercy Retirement & Care Center is nice, bright, light, and airy. The rooms are nice, and they have regular religious services. They have a nice cafeteria where they have large gatherings. Every month, they have a special event with entertainment. The food was very good. It was a Cinco de Mayo celebration when I was there, and they had delicious Mexican food. The staff was very good.

Mercy Retirement was OK. The people were nice and extremely gracious. The staff members were very welcoming and even gave me a book about taking care of elderly parents. I wasn't thrilled with the actual facility because it was old and had a smell to it. It wasn't dirty nor dilapidated at all, just obviously old and outdated. Everyone there was lovely and seemed like they provide the same care as other places. They're just out of our price range. I saw their assisted living and memory care units, and they also have skilled nursing. They showed me some of their spaces for activities. One of the things they could improve on would be updating the furnishings and facility since it's been there for a long time.

I thought Mercy Retirement was great. We had a tour, and we got to see all of their facilities including the rooms. They sat down with us at the end and went over the details of the pricing. They did a really great job. They have a bunch of activities. It is a Catholic organization, so they do mass and a lot of religious activities, but then they also have a music therapist and an art therapy session throughout the week as well as games and other things for the residents.

I was really impressed with Mercy Retirement. It's a 5 or 6-story building. They have a skilled nursing facility. It is immaculate, and they had a light system so they could get to anybody. It's just phenomenal. The neighborhood is not topnotch, but they have hundreds of yards of grass behind the building.

The people at Mercy seemed to be very friendly. It is not in a good neighborhood, and the buildings themselves seemed rather tired, but the people seemed good.

I use to live in the neighborhood. I was looking for a Spanish speaking facility. Mercy Retirement and Care Center had a great impression. It was clean. People were friendly and nice, and it was a good impression. The staff gave me a tour, and they asked what her needs are through an evaluation. We sat down, and it was great. They invited me to come over with my mom. Their services were great; it is just their fees. The rooms seemed a little small, but other than that they have everything they need. I did see their dining facility, and they showed us the menu, but I didn't eat there. The dining room is nice and clean, and it smelled good. They have bingo and movie nights. They have mass there every day because they are Catholic. They are very close to a church. They come over, and on Sundays they have a big mass. If it is hard for the senior to get out, they come to them. I would recommend them. I really wish I could afford it because it would have been a great place for mom.

I visited Mercy Retirement & Care Center during the Christmas Holiday, so it was kind of busy. The place was beautiful and the decorations were gorgeous. Everybody were very nice. It was an outstanding place but I could not afford the fee.

I was thoroughly impressed by Mercy. Both the residents and staff members alike radiate an attitude unlike any other. Not only were all the staff members friendly, they all seemed genuinely interested in what they were doing. It seemed like they wanted to be there and didn't regard it as just another dead-end job. The office staff were funny and cheerful, and yet quite capable of answering questions regarding finances, visitations, extra-curricular activities, educational opportunities, etc. There were plenty of recreation opportunities for residents, as well as a thoroughly-stocked library, a dining hall capable of seating several hundred at a time, and even a therapy dog running around brightening people's days. Overall, I have to say I was most impressed by the residents, who were genuinely happy to be there. Everyone that I met had nothing but positive things to say, and all recommended Mercy. Mercy even has a smart "run away" system that uses an RFID bracelet to disable elevator access for patients with amnesia or other degenerative conditions that may cause them to try and "walk out" of the facility. I have nothing but good things to say about Mercy and highly encourage anyone looking for a long-term assisted living facility to contact them and take a tour. You won't be sorry that you did.

I prefer more outdoor area and a protestant sponsor.

Mercy Retirement & Care Center is connected to the Catholic church. It offers assisted living and skilled nursing--and I know it because I referred a patient there from the hospital where I work. I've also visited it. It's an older building, well kept up. The rooms are very nice--private--and there are different floor plans to choose from. And it's centrally located in a safe part of Oakland, close to shops and restaurants, with easy access to public transportation. There's 24-hour care even in assisted living, and the staff is very welcoming and friendly. They're also well-trained. They have ongoing lectures, training, workshops. They have all types of activities: sing-alongs, Catholic mass, group trivia, art, crossword puzzles, exercise class. And the food is good--three balanced meals a day prepared by a licensed chef.

The Doctor on staff does not care. He keeps repeating "not necessary" whenever I asked for an X'ray for my mom to check her coughing & breathing problem. He stuck his stethoscope on her then claims everything sounds fine, not to worry. When he finally ordered the X'ray 3 weeks later, it revealed pleural effusions & infiltrates, indicative of pneumonia. I was livid. She could have been treated earlier. From then on, she developed respiratory problems.
